Michelle Malkin posted this photo on her Twitter page with the caption: “Standing ovation from Waukesha County GOP women for my special guests, @CaliKidJMP & Wendy Rittenhouse. Huge shutout sent from all of us in WI to warrior @LLinWood. . . #Fightback #FightBack.Law”
What a difference a few months make. Pierce is off #FightBack. Lin Wood appears to have cut ties with the attorney. A Daily Beast article published yesterday is titled: “Kenosha Shooter Kyle Rittenhouse’s MAGA-Loving Defense Team Implodes.”
Lots of problem, lots of setbacks, lots of disappointment for Team Rittenhouse. If one takes a closer look, there appears to be one central cause, one root problem, one corrosive fly in the appointment — that would be embattled attorney John Mark Pierce.
It was a brutal week for Kyle Rittenhouse’s lawyer John Pierce. Accusations of witness intimidation, bar complaints and a scathing filing by the Wisconsin prosecutor raising concerns about potential for “self-dealing” and “fraud” by the attorney with a “dossier” of troubling issues. It ended with yet another public shaming for the Harvard Law School educated Pierce— he stepped off the Rittenhouse criminal defense team, which was the subject of nationwide media coverage. And, another blow for Rudy Giuliani’s “close friend,” John Pierce, received less attention, it appears that Lin Wood has kicked the bombastic attorney to the curb. Yet, Wendy Rittenhouse, appears to still trust the attorney beset by rejection, abandonment, and disappointments.
The latest example comes by way of a “press release” issued on Pierce Bainbridge P.C. letterhead about a “new fundraising venture” — or perhaps some would opine a “new grift by a grifter. The release is actually co-executed by Wendy Rittenhouse, which appears a clear sign the Kenosha shooter’s mother is still drinking the John Mark Pierce cool-aid.
Pierce’s Rittenhouse related misfortunes commenced with the #FightBack Foundation, a legal fundraising entity. The Foundation was announced with much fanfare, and Pierce as a member of the Board of Directors with two other attorneys, one being Lin Wood.
The glory was short-lived. Pierce financial shambles were exposed and he stepped off the Board. Yet Wood — the clear leader of the group — stood by the attorney, as reflected in a Daily Beast coverage from September 4, 2020.
And, now just months later, Pierce appears to be a #FightBack outcast. Wood — who perhaps regrets inviting Pierce to the party in the first place — was quoted yesterday in the Daily Beast, a quote which suggests he is done with the John Pierce Experience.
The Atlanta attorney would not be the first to reject Pierce. In June 2019, an attorney Yahoo describes as the “lawyer at the center of the Trump universe,” Marc Mukasey, was hired by Pierce’s firm as an outside lawyer. Mukasey made glowing public statements about Pierce’s law firm, saying it was “an honor to represent” Pierce Bainbridge, which Mukasey characterized as “a first-class law firm made up of terrific lawyers and great people.”
Several months later, Mukasey quit representing Pierce and his firm citing concerns about ethics and payment.
Pierce’s seeming pattern of failing to live up to people’s initial perceptions, perhaps aligns with opinions that the Rittenhouse attorney is a “phony,” “con man” and a “fraud.”
With respect to Kyle Rittenhouse, Pierce talked a big game on extradition. Pierce failed.
Pierce also talked months ago about a legal team of “special forces,” an “amazing defense team now fully assembled,” a “team of best lawyers in the USA.” Yet, as reported in the Kenosha News:
“In statements after Rittenhouse was charged, Pierce had said he would be assembling a ‘Seal Team’ of attorneys to fight the teenager’s prosecution. With Pierce and [Andrew] Calderon withdrawing from the case, only [Marc] Richards is listed on the court file as counsel.”
And although Rittenhouse was bailed out, concerns have been raised about related fundraising. The Wisconsin prosecutor said Pierce’s “substantial personal debts [and] his involvement with an unregulated and opaque ‘slush fund’ provides ample opportunity for self-dealing and fraud.”
This is not an isolated issue; it comports with Pierce related news swirling for some time now, for example:
- according to a Pierce Bainbridge Beck Price & Hecht spokesperson, in March 2020, Pierce was placed on leave from his own law firm in related to “personal use” of funds; Pierce now claims his firm’s own spokesperson was not truthful;
- a lawyer in Philadelphia, in August 2020, said Pierce’s own income and expense statement suggests that the attorney raided firm accounts or improperly used funds from lenders;
- an article in Forbes, in August 2019, indicates that Pierce had been accused of financial self-dealing at Pierce Bainbridge.
In sum, there is reasonable grounds for concern that Attorney John M. Pierce has had his hands in the #Fightback cookie jar.
Exacerbating concerns, Mike “My Pillow Guy” Lindell has suggested that he was bamboozled by #FightBack — according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Lindell intends to ask for his $50,000 back.
Another high-profile issue has arisen which casts further shade of the operations of John Pierce. A Newsweek reporter named Naveed Jamali, posted an interesting tweet about Pierce’s relationship with Carter Page; Page is one of several high-profile clients who have hired Pierce’s unsuccessful and corrupt law firm.
As for Page, Jamali’s tweet speaks for itself.
John Pierce has been rejected and abandoned by:
- around 60 of his own lawyers
- “a lawyer at the center of the Trump universe” Marc Mukasey
- seemingly the high-profile founder of the #FightBack Foundation, Lin Wood,
- his Harvard Law School educated former wife,
- cash advance lenders have sued Pierce’s firm,
- vendors of legal services have sued Pierce’s firm,
- a car-rental place in California obtained a judgment against John Pierce a few years back . . .
. . . a “Seal Team” and “Dream Team” of attorneys has turned out to be a single criminal defense attorney in Wisconsin.
Notwithstanding these issues, Pierce still appears to have the trust and confidence of the Kenosha shooter’s mother Wendy Rittenhouse.
Addendum: Rudy Giuliani hired John Pierce’s firm Pierce Bainbridge Beck Price & Hecht LLP for Ukraine in November 2019. The corrupt firm splintered months later. The conduct of Pierce and certain of his former partners is the subject of “Gangland Tactics or Aggressive Lawyering?” It is a fascinating read.
